Lazy and Entitled: The Misunderstood Generations (In-Person)

Please join us on October 17th for the Lazy and Entitled: The Misunderstood Generations education event

Join us and learn more about statistical information and giving trends that combat the stereotypes of Millennials and Gen-Z populations as donors and philanthropists. During the presentation, participants will engage in an interactive game that provides hands-on experience to approaching Millennials and Gen-Z populations as donors, board members, and philanthropists. The presentation will also include information on opportunities to modernize ways of giving and impact for better engagement with these misunderstood generations.

Speakers

Chelsea Brown
Chelsea is an award-winning philanthropist, social impactadvocate, and entrepreneur. Trained as a nonprofit management professional, Chelsea has more than eight years of experience in philanthropy, fundraising, sponsorships and grantmaking. Through her passion to bring diversity and inclusion to philanthropy, she received the Diverse Communities Scholarship through the Association of Fundraising Professionals International Conference and the Charles R. Stephens Scholarship for the AADO/CASE Conference on Diverse Philanthropy and Leadership.

In 2019, she was selected to be a Forbes Under 30 Scholar, University of Maryland's Do Good Institute Philanthropy Fellow, and a William Randolph Hearst Fellow with the Aspen Institute's Philanthropy and Social Innovation Program. In 2020, she was highlighted as a "Black Woman to Watch in Philanthropy" in BlackHer's study on Black philanthropy titled "The Black Woman's Guide to Philanthropy." As an advocate for community engagement, she has served on more than five boards, including the Winthrop University Foundation Board of Directors. She also served the Nasdaq Foundation as the Corporate Purpose Specialist, providing support for Foundation-related grants administration and corporate social responsibility strategy. During her time as a graduate student at the University of Maryland's School of Public Policy, Chelsea was a Millard E. Tydings Regents Fellowship Fund recipient and was selected as a Philanthropy Fellow underneath the University of Maryland's Do Good Institute.

Currently, Chelsea serves as the founder of The Black Mill, a consulting firm focused on providing coordinating cross-functional efforts to drive engagement, programs, and partnerships with nonprofit and for-profit partners internationally. Through her work with The Black Mill, Chelsea has supported grantmaking and grantwriting support for Black and Missing Foundation, The Upwork Foundation, Baltimore Legacy Builders Collective and more. Recently, Chelsea was a recipient of the 2022 BGE Energizing Small Business Grant, earning grant funding support to expand the Black Mill to offer sponsorship and partnership strategies for large-scale cultural events and organizations. Chelsea received her Master of Public Management from University of Maryland in 2021, and her Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication from Winthrop University in 2014.

Leslie M. Jefferson
Leslie Jefferson currently serves as the Development Officer for Brookings Metro at The Brookings Institution to meet Brookings Metro’s annual fundraising goals to support Brookings Metro research based in fact and belief that every community can be prosperous, just, and resilient - no matter its starting point. Leslie also works contractually with The Black Mill as a lead grant writer and strategist, supporting grassroots and BlPOC-led organizations to overcome historical barriers to fundraising. She also served as the post-award Grants Manager for the Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and Environmental Justice departments at Georgetown University and managed multi millions of dollars in sponsored research grant funds for university professors to effectively run programs for the betterment of society. 

Leslie had the esteemed pleasure of serving The SEED School of Maryland nonprofit educational, college preparatory boarding program for over 12 years  as a Student Life Assistant, Student Life Counselor, Dean of Students, Family and Community Engagement Coordinator, Federal Grants and Community Engagement Manager, and Senior Federal Grants and Community Engagement Manager. During her time there, she served on S.E.E.D. Leads, focusing on institutional advancement and communities of practices to expand the educational model. 

Leslie earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and received the Most Outstanding Anthropology Major award. In addition, she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Kaplan University earning a Master's Degree in Teacher Education. In addition, Leslie pursued her graduate certification in Nonprofit Management and Leadership as a Nonprofit Fellow from the University of Maryland College Park to expand her professional grant consultation services.
