MESSAGE FROM THE
PRESIDENT
PHILANTHROPY DAY A CELEBRATORY SUCCESS:
The sixth Annual National Capital Philanthropy Day was
one of the best yet, thanks to the generous support
of 12 co-convening nonprofit organizations and 30 dedicated
sponsors. On Thursday, November 1, nearly 500 philanthropic
leaders, senior business executives, professional fundraisers,
and volunteers gathered to honor five outstanding philanthropists
who, every day, are making the Washington region a better
place and inspiring others to make a difference.
In addition to John Delaney and April McClain-Delaney;
Edward L. Cohen; the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation;
Booz Allen Hamilton; and Nicholas B. Simmonds, CFRE,
15 individuals and organizations were recognized for
their philanthropic leadership through the Honor Your
Own program.
AFP/DC extends its warmest thanks to the 17 volunteer
leaders—especially co-chairs Lynn Croneberger
and Evan Davies—and more than 20 additional volunteers
who made this celebration of philanthropy such a success.
Special thanks especially to Leon Harris, anchor of
ABC 7/WJLA-TV, who served as Master of Ceremonies for
the fourth year in a row, and to these sponsors: Lead
Sponsor AOL,
Patron Sponsors Booz
Allen Hamilton; Campbell
& Company; Hazen
Inc.; kaze
design; RAFFA, P.C.;
and Wolf Trap Foundation

and Annual Partners Campbell & Company and Impact
Communications.
Thanks again to everyone who attended and made National
Capital Philanthropy Day possible. Your inspiration
will lead us toward an even bigger celebration next
year! Proceeds from the event will go toward scholarships
for area nonprofit organizations that support fundraising
efforts and philanthropy.
GOVERNANCE UPDATE:
President-Elect Nancy Withbroe and I attended the first
annual AFP Leadership Academy and AFP Chapter Presidents
Council Meeting held in Lexington, Kentucky from October
11-13th. Since the dissolution of Delegate Assembly
last year, this was the first time that leaders from
other chapters could gather for education and networking
sessions. We also had the opportunity to have good discussion
on issues affecting our own chapters in the valuable
“like-sized chapter” meetings.
Congratulations to three AFP/DC members who have been
elected to positions with AFP International: Martha
H. Schumacher, CFRE was recently elected to the AFP
International board representing District I (including
the Washington DC Metro Area chapter); Walter R. Gillette,
III, CFRE was elected as an at-large member of the board;
and Jeff Kost was elected to the Committee on Directorship,
which acts as the committee to nominate board members
and officers to the International board. Congratulations
to all three for representing the DC Chapter so proudly!
MEMBER DIRECTORY:
Watch your mailbox for the 2007-2008 AFP/DC Member Directory
& Resource Guide. Just published, I know that this
is a valuable resource that I keep very close at hand
throughout the year. Thank you to all of our advertisers
who support the production of this publication each
year.

ROUNDTABLE PROGRAM – Tuesday, November 27
Fund Raising for US-based International Organizations
-- Key Considerations and Putting a Face on the Work
of Your Organization
For U.S.-based organization whose mission is global
and whose activities take place overseas, what factors
are important to recognize and likely to influence their
efforts to build support for their international organizations?
What do recent surveys indicate concerning raising support
for international services? How likely are funders from
various sectors going to support such organization?
Many international organizations face the challenge
of the fact that their donors are here and their organization's
work takes place far away. How can these nonprofits
best put a face on the work of their organization, and
make a persuading case to prospects that their organization
merits support?
Julie Crudele from the Centre for Development and Population
Activities, Mary Ray, CFRE of the Global Child Nutrition
Foundation and Jennie Thompson, an independent consultant
and frequent speaker on international fundraising issues
will lead a discussion on these issues as well as on
the many special factors that need to be considered
when seeking funding support for an international organization.
