E-BAG JUNE 2007 Dear AFP/DC Members: Greetings friends and colleagues! It seems like only months ago I was greeting you as your new chapter president. Now I am here to say "farewell" and let you know that it has been an honor and a privilege to serve you and the chapter over the past 12 months. I am incredibly grateful to the hardworking board of directors and other volunteers who have worked by my side throughout this past year. We have accomplished some remarkable things, including: the inaugural Bridge to Integrated Marketing and Fundraising Conference, Fifth Annual National Capital Philanthropy Day, Ten Star Award from AFP International, outstanding educational and member networking events, a beautiful four-color newsletter capturing many of our events, and a diversity committee that is re-energized and engaged in our regional philanthropic community. I think we have a lot to be proud of as members of such a vibrant chapter of this association. And I am so thrilled to be welcoming Grace Hong as the new president of the chapter. She brings an incredible set of skills to this job and has volunteered in almost every aspect of the chapter since 1998. Not to mention her wonderful sense of humor and genuine kindness to others make her a wonderful person to lead the chapter in the coming year. I hope you will join me in supporting her in her new role. FUNDRAISING A TOP CAREER CHOICE: The May/June issue of Advancing Philanthropy Magazine highlighted a report from U.S. News & World Report from March 19, 2007 ("The Best Job for You") that including fundraising among the 10 hot careers right now. The magazine identified 10 professions "that will be in growing demand as baby boomers age, the Internet become ubiquitous, and Americans seek richer, simpler lives." To read more about the 25 careers listed in the issue, visit www.usnews.com/careers . VOLUNTEER OR VISIT YOUR IN-LAWS?: This headline caught my attention when the AFP eWire popped into my Inbox on May 21st: Americans Would Rather Visit In-Laws Than Volunteer. The story lead was that "more Americans would rather visit their in-laws than volunteer for a charitable organization, according to a new survey sponsored by Ronald McDonald House Charities." "While Americans overwhelmingly (93 percent) believe that it is important to promote volunteerism, especially among youth, less than half (45 percent) currently contribute their time to a charitable organization. In addition, more than half (51 percent) said they'd rather spend their free time reading, watching television or visiting the in-laws than volunteering for charity. While I know there's at least one good in-law joke in here, the AFP/DC Chapter has formed a volunteer Task Force and is currently examining the way in which we recruit, strengthen, and recognize our chapter volunteers. And based on our own survey, we had very different results. We found that out of more than 100 respondents,
If you're interested in joining the Task Force or providing feedback, please contact me directly at president@afpdc.org. THANK YOU again for the honor of working with all of you this past year. I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming program or networking event very soon! All the best to each of you,
Jeff
