MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear AFP/DC Members:

THANK YOU: Two AFP/DC board members submitted resignations last month due to a move and to added responsibilities at work. Kathy Bricker, of the Ocean Conservancy, who has moved to Michigan, was a wonderful board member who will be missed, although her emails and volunteer work continue. Her work on the Membership Committee ensured that every new member of the chapter got a personal welcome call. Alicia Figueiredo is another board member who will be missed. Her work at The National Academies is offering more opportunities and so she is stepping down from her role as an AFP/DC board member. I have always appreciated Alicia's quiet yet thoughtful voice at board committees.

PHILANTHROPY DAY: I am pleased to announce the Awards Committee selections for the Fifth Annual National Capital Philanthropy Day. AFP/DC chapter will bestow these awards upon the following individuals or organizations:

  • Outstanding Corporate Partner - World Bank Group
Nominated by Capital Area Food Bank, Latin American Youth Center and Miriam's Kitchen
  • Outstanding Foundation Partner - The Annie E. Casey Foundation
Nominated by The Points of Light Foundation
  • Outstanding Fundraising Professional - Martha H. Schumacher, CFRE
Nominated by The Red Wolf Coalition
  • Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer - Sidney O. Dewberry
Nominated by George Mason University Foundation
  • Outstanding Philanthropist - Julie Jensen
Nominated by Washington Area Women's Foundation

The Fifth Annual National Capital Philanthropy Day Luncheon and Awards Presentation will be held on Friday November 3, 2006 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, from 11:30 am – 2 pm. The Master of Ceremonies will be Leon Harris, award-winning anchor of ABC affiliate WJLA-TV News Channel 7.
Proceeds from this event are used to support scholarships for area nonprofit organizations around fundraising and philanthropy.

Sponsorships and tables are available but going fast! Nominations for "Honor you Own" will be accepted until October 9th.

Please join us for this most auspicious occasion. Don't wake up on November 4th and realize that you have missed this opportunity to celebrate philanthropy with your colleagues in the community!

All forms are now available on the AFP/DC Website to download Honor Your
Own forms, sponsorship opportunities, and event registration information.
Read more about National Capital Philanthropy Day below.

GOVERNANCE ISSUE CONTINUED: Thank you to those AFP/DC chapter members who participated in a meeting with a member of the AFP Governance Task Force on September 21, 2006. Several former AFP /DC chapter presidents joined current chapter board members in a dialogue, along with Alphonce J. Brown, Jr., Chair of AFP International. We will continue to keep chapter members informed as we move forward and will certainly have news following the Delegate Assembly at the end of October.

NCPD HONOR YOUR OWN - deadline extended to October 9

Honor Your Own nominations for National Capital Philanthropy Day are due October 9th from nonprofits that want to recognize and further cultivate their best in the following five categories:

  • Foundations
  • Corporations
  • Philanthropists
  • Fundraising Volunteers
  • Fundraising Professionals

You do not have to be an AFP/DC member to submit an Honor Your Own and your recipient does not have to be an AFP/DC member. The event is for the philanthropic community in the metro DC area and is hosted by AFP/DC. If you have a person or organization who helped to make your philanthropic efforts more successful this year, then the Honor Your Own program is an ideal way for you to say thank you to them. We will include your words of thanks in the program book, include their name on the Power Point, and provide you with a certificate to present to your honoree at the table.

Please review the details on the PDF then submit your information via the online registration by October 9, 2006.
