E-BAG AUGUST
2006
E-Bag Sponsored by

MESSAGE FROM THE
PRESIDENT
Dear AFP/DC Members,
This past week I was privileged to speak
to a small group of students from the Ukraine about
how we approach fundraising in the United States. As
I prepared my remarks, I searched for a definition for
philanthropy and found this:
Philanthropy: Love of humankind, usually expressed
by an effort to enhance the well-being of humanity through
personal acts of practical kindness or by financial
support of a cause or causes, such as charity, quality
of life… Philanthropy and volunteerism are uniquely
American traditions, and their pervasive presence in
our lives is often taken for granted.
I was struck by the last sentence and that as a uniquely
American tradition, philanthropy is often taken for
granted. Is it?
One way we as fundraisers can be sure that philanthropy
doesn't become taken for granted is to honor philanthropy.
There is no better way to recognize philanthropy this
year than by taking part in the fifth annual National
Capital Philanthropy Day, a celebration of giving, on
Friday November 3, 2006.
This year's National Capital Philanthropy Day
Luncheon and Awards Presentation will be held at the
Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, from 11:30 am – 2
pm. For the third year in a row, the Master of Ceremonies
will be Leon Harris, award-winning anchor of ABC affiliate
WJLA-TV News Channel 7. We are thrilled that he has
made such a great commitment to this event and to our
community.
We will present awards for Outstanding Philanthropist,
Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer, Outstanding Corporate
Partner, Outstanding Foundation Partner, and Outstanding
Fundraising Professional.
In addition to the five top awards being presented,
nonprofit organizations have the unique opportunity
to “Honor Your Own” in any of the five categories.
Honor Your Own honorees will receive recognition from
the podium during the event; a listing in the National
Capital Philanthropy Day program
booklet; a certificate of honor, and a special gift.
The Honor Your Own Form will soon be available on the
AFP/DC chapter web site. Last year we had approximately
80 Honor Your Own recognitions! Can we top that this
year?!
Proceeds from this event are used to support scholarships
for area nonprofit organizations around fundraising
and philanthropy.
Watch the AFP/DC Web site for how to download NCPD Award
nomination forms, Honor Your Own forms, sponsorship
opportunities, and event registration information.
MY THANK YOU NOTE: My last President's letter
was a call to action to encourage you to attend the
Bridge to Integrated Marketing and Fundraising Conference.
And by gosh, you did! More than 1,000 registrants, speakers
and exhibitors did! It was a phenomenal event and undertaking
and I want to personally thank each and every one of
you who had a hand in attending, sponsoring, volunteering,
speaking, exhibiting, and recruiting others to attend.
It was an enormous success and I want to publicly thank
AFP/DC board members and Conference Co-chairs Geoff
Peters and Nancy Withbroe for their vision, their commitment
and their dedication to this inaugural event.

2006-2007 MEMBER DIRECTORY UPDATE - due
August 18
Remember we use the AFP International
database when creating our chapter directory; so make
sure to review your record online at www.afpnet.org
before August 18 to be included in
the 2006-2007 Directory which will be delivered this
Fall.
- Go
to "Quicklinks: Address Change"
to verify your address. You now have the option to
have a primary and an alternate address. We will use
the primary address in the directory.
- Go to "Quicklinks: Demographics"
and update your profile. Since we sort the directory
three ways - by last name, by organization name, and
by organization type, it is important to select a
"Type of Organization" so we can sort your
organization by the proper category.
- Remember
to complete your update before 5:00 p.m.
on August 18.
If you have
questions about the 2006-2007 Member Directory and Resource
Guide, please contact Mary
Lou Swiscoski at 202-547-0155.
