E-BAG JuLY
2006
E-Bag Sponsored by

MESSAGE FROM THE
PRESIDENT
Dear AFP/DC Members,
Greetings from your
new AFP/DC chapter President! From time to time, I hope
to come to you with a couple brief items. This month
I have two items - an action item and an acknowledgement.
I know your time is valuable, so I will take only a
few precious moments of yours.
ACTION ITEM: If you haven't registered yet for
the 2006 Bridge to Integrated Fundraising & Marketing
Conference, July 12 – 14th, this is one of your
last opportunities. Don't let your colleagues
tell you what a fabulous educational and networking
event you missed – experience it for yourself!
Don't wait for a Fundraising Day Washington conference
this fall – it's not happening! Fundraising
Day Washington has been folded into this exciting inaugural
two-day summer conference. Special thanks to Nancy Withbroe,
CFRE and Geoffrey Peters for their outstanding leadership
as conference co-chairs this year. If you see them,
please express your thanks to them for their months
of hard work and dedication!
Some of the top names in fundraising today whom I have
admired over the years – from Tony Elischer to
Karen Osborne, Roger Craver, Bernard Ross, and our own
AFP/DC board member Sheeraz Haji – will all be
speaking at our conference – and I always walk
away from their talks with something that makes me want
to run back to my office and work smarter! Don't
miss them.
Plus, the customary tracks such as Major Gifts, Boards
and Advanced Executives will be supplemented this year
with exciting new tracks on Faith-based Fundraising,
Cause Marketing, and Internet, Search and Email Fundraising.
Call for volunteers…We're also looking for
chapter members attending the conference to volunteer
some time in 15 minute increments to help direct traffic,
greet attendees, etc. If you can lend a smile and point
people in the right direction, we would really appreciate
your time. For more information and to sign up, contact
Lisa Boccia, conference volunteer guru at lboccia03@yahoo.com.
So take a minute before you finish reading this E-bag
– I'll wait… And register
right now. Go ahead. I'm waiting!
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: I was watching the Tony Awards last
week before I wrote this and Julia Roberts got up to
present the Tony Award for best actor in a play. But
before she did, she went off script and said, “I
just want to take this opportunity to say that you people
are insanely talented.” And that is often how
I feel about the privilege of working with all of you.
I want to especially thank Kathy Swayze whose insane
talent and dedication to this chapter over the past
18 months as your president were an inspiration to me.
Her vision for the future of this chapter and for the
governance and diversity of AFP on the local and international
level continues to be truly remarkable.
I think we have a great year ahead of us. I want to
officially welcome our chapter's President Elect
Grace Hong, Director of Development at Children's
Hospital Foundation and all of the officers and board
members who are serving the chapter this year. We are
grateful for your service. I hope you have the opportunity
to introduce yourselves to our board leadership in the
weeks and months ahead. We want to hear from you and
certainly want to know what is on the minds of our members.
If you have a concern or suggestion, I encourage you
to get in touch with me.
I hope to see you at the Bridge Conference July 12 –
14th!

Every Member Campaign
Announcing
the Kickoff for the “2006 Every Member Campaign”
It is that time of year when we ask our
members to “give back” by supporting the
AFP Foundation through the Every
Member Campaign.
When you support the campaign you enable the foundation
to fund innovative research, influence public and institutional
opinions of fundraising and philanthropy, along with
creating new programs and provide services for members.
Locally, your donation comes back to the chapter through
the Partnership Grant Program – returning 25%
of contributions received from our members to fund chapter
activities that benefit AFP/DC fundraising professionals.
Over the next several weeks chapter members will be
receiving telemarketing calls asking you for a gift
to support for this vital program. I hope that each
of you will make the most generous contribution you
can … and “give back” so that we can
continue to provide excellent programming and mentoring
opportunities for all our members.
Thank you
Grace Hong
