Message from the President

Welcome to the March edition of your AFP/DC E-Bag. Each month, we attempt to bring you up to date on the activities and services offered in YOUR chapter. You are the strength of this organization. Along with nearly 1,000 other fundraising professionals, you inform and inspire our activities throughout the year. I encourage you to let us know if there are ways we can improve your experience as an AFP/DC member. And, if you know someone else who could benefit from membership, send us an email with his or her contact information to info@afpdc.org and we'll be happy to send more information.

Over the past year, no one has been more dedicated to reaching new members than our Vice President of Membership, Mary Grimm. During her tenure as VP, Mary has moved to a new home, changed jobs, suffered a foot injury and mourned a loss in her immediate family. Through it all, she continued to provide outstanding leadership to her membership team and our chapter. She is tirelessly dedicated to meeting members' needs and to attracting new fundraising professionals to our organization. Thanks Mary for all you do!

One of the highlights of the year for AFP/DC members is our Annual Member reception, which is hosted by the chapter as a celebration of all our members. It's one of the best networking opportunities of the year so mark your calendars now for the 2006 Member Reception on May 24 from 6 to 8 pm at the Human Rights Campaign's Equality Center.

Your first 2006 issue of Capital Resource, our AFP/DC newsletter, will arrive in your mailbox very soon. I want to thank our VP of Communications, Marshall Ginn, and newsletter editors Michelle Payne, Diane Hill and Meegan McVay for their excellent work on this edition.

And, finally, I want to thank YOU for your membership. I look forward to seeing you at an event soon!

Kathy Swayze, CFRE
President

P.S. If you are attending the AFP International Conference in Atlanta next month, please plan to join us for great food, drinks and networking at our DC Chapter reception on Monday, April 3rd from from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. The reception will be held in the Omni Hotel at CNN Center in International Ballroom D. Please RSVP with the subject line "RSVP for Atlanta Reception" to info@afpdc.org by March 20.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS TO THE AFP/DC BOARD - submissions due March 22

This is the official Call for Nominations to the AFP/DC 2006-2007 Board of Directors. We are looking to fill a few positions on the board at this time. You are welcome to nominate yourself or another person you think would make a valuable contribution to our community in a leadership role. We are looking for diversity, talent, commitment to the profession, and leaders with integrity. The face of philanthropy has changed significantly in the last twenty years. The AFP/DC Board of Directors wants the board to reflect those changes, recognizing that leadership is critical to the excellence, growth and success of our chapter and our profession. The Call and Nomination Form is linked on our home page.

Deadline for submission of a nomination is March 22, 2006 and must include the nominee's resume. The final slate of officers and directors will be emailed to AFP/DC members on May 15, 2006. AFP/DC members who are in good standing on May 31 will have the opportunity to vote through June 15, 2006. Terms will begin July 1, 2006 and end June 30, 2009.

In the spirit of advance notice, please mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 22nd. We will again meet from 5 - 7:30pm but this time at Buffalo Billiards in Dupont Circle. That will give us a little more space because I'm sure you'll all want to invite some more friends for the next one!

Please note: The Young Professionals Happy Hour is intended for those who are under age 40 and/or who have fewer than 7 years of fundraising or nonprofit experience. We're asking everyone to please respect this criteria so we can maximize peer-building networks.
