Message from the President

Happy New Year! The year is kicking off with tremendous energy and enthusiasm here at AFP/DC. The Board of Directors will meet later this month for a full day session on "Fostering Board Excellence”. The Education Team is busy planning for our January luncheon on the 19th and exciting programming for the coming months.

And, our 2006 Fundraising Day Washington co-chair Nancy Withbroe, CFRE is busy putting together her Leadership Team for this year's conference. In an exciting development, the chapter will hold our conference this year in conjunction with the Direct Marketing Association of Washington (DMAW).

Mark your calendars NOW for the most exciting educational event of the year! “2006 Bridge to Integrated Fundraising and Marketing”, or the Bridge Conference, will be held July 12-14 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. You may attend Fundraising Day alone on July 13… or sign up for the full conference and gain even more insight from outstanding speakers in the direct response and online fundraising fields.

The chapter is extremely excited about this opportunity to partner with DMAW to expand and diversify our educational offerings. In today's increasingly competitive fundraising environment, integrating our fundraising, marketing and communications efforts has never been more important.

I am extremely grateful to Nancy for taking on the challenge of this new conference format and delighted that one of our AFP/DC board members, Geoff Peters, will be the chair for DMAW. With these two behind it, the event is sure to be a great success. Stay tuned to the Website for more information about the conference in the coming weeks… and if you want to get involved in planning this year's conference, we would love to have you. Please complete the Volunteer Form and fax it to 202-547-6348.

I hope to see you at some of our educational events in the coming months and wish you tremendous success in 2006!

Kathy Swayze, CFRE
President

Session 2 - Tools and Techniques to Help You and Your Leadership Maximize Your Gift Planning Activities

DESCRIPTION:
Session 1 - Everyone has the opportunity to plant the seeds of gift giving by bequest, but not everyone has a comfortable and focused way to broach the subject with tact and sensitivity. This presentation will provide some simple tools that can be used every time you're with a donor or friend of your organization.

Session 2 - Helping your boss and your volunteers to be comfortable with talking about planned giving is a real challenge. They need to understand it in down to earth, easy to absorb terms that are meaningful to them. This presentation will show you what to focus on to help make that happen so that they understand that planned giving is not just deferred giving, but a powerful tool to raise sights and outcomes with all of your best friends and donors.

Mentoring Program

New Year's resolution time is here! It's time to enrich your career by signing up to be a Mentor or Mentee. With a minimal time commitment (recommended meetings once/month) you can enter into a relationship unlike any other, devoted to learning from another professional outside of your organization.

All are welcome. Right now, the AFP/DC Mentoring Committee also has particular opportunities for:

  1. Mentees who need help with strategic planning; fundraising from corporations; and general counsel
  2. Mentors who can advise on how best to run a Capital Campaign; handling high-end donors; and how to prioritize in a small shop

All are welcome! Join us today by visiting /events/mentoring.html and faxing your application with cover page to Douglas Lovell at 202-537-5637.

Thanks to The Sheridan Group for sponsoring the Mentoring Program.
