Message from the President

Dear AFP/DC Members,

With Fundraising Day Washington less than three weeks away, excitement is building for a truly spectacular day. The outstanding plenary speakers are reason enough to attend. We'll have Cherie Brown from the National Coalition Building Institute, one of the top diversity training and grassroots leadership organizations in the world. We'll also hear about the six principles of ethical influence from Dr. Susan Ledlow, a Cialdini Method Certified Trainer and social psychologist. I have had the pleasure to attend workshops with both Cherie Brown and Dr. Ledlow's colleague Dr. Cialdini over the past year, and I promise …you are in for a treat and a real boost to your professional vocabulary.

If you haven't registered for Fundraising Day Washington yet, what are you waiting for? Register today! And while you're thinking about registrations, don't forget to buy your ticket for the National Capital Philanthropy Day luncheon on November 14. It's the only time this year when you can have lunch with more than 500 of the nonprofit sector's movers and shakers.

In other industry news, CFRE International has announced that beginning in April 2006, candidates from Canada and the United States will be able to take the CFRE examination via computer at any one of over 300 proctored testing centers in North America. For more information about the new testing procedure and application deadlines, visit their website.

Finally, as we head into the year-end fundraising season, I know that many of you are wondering how the massive charitable response to Hurricane Katrina will impact your fundraising efforts. While it is a bit early to tell, there are signs that some non-relief organizations are experiencing a fall-off in donations. I urge everyone in the AFP/DC membership to use all communications vehicles to be in touch with your donors. Convey to them that we appreciate their generous response to the disaster, AND urge them to continue their other ongoing commitments as well.

There are many local and national organizations that respond year round to slower moving disasters like hunger, homelessness, failing schools, life threatening diseases and more. In 2005 -- more than any other year -- we fundraisers must use our skills and creativity to tap into every American's true “spirit of giving”.

I look forward to seeing you in person in the coming weeks.

Sincerely,

Kathy Swayze, CFRE
President
