Message from the President

Dear AFP/DC Members,

With the summer winding down and our busiest months upon us, it's nice to get some really great news. That's why I'm pleased to report that our chapter has received a $25,000 grant from the Fannie Mae Foundation Fund of The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region. This is the third year for the grant, which supports our mentoring and educational opportunities for nonprofit fundraising staff throughout the region. I would like to thank AFP/DC member Nancy Withbroe and Past President Martha Schumacher, CFRE for their efforts to secure and renew this important funding for our chapter.

If you are a procrastinator like me … you're in luck! Because the Early Bird registration for Fundraising Day Washington has been extended to September 9. So, take a moment right now to visit the FDW website and sign up to attend the region's largest gathering of fundraising professionals on October 26th. Group rates are available if you register three of more people from your organization. If you are interested in exhibit or sponsorship opportunities at the conference, please contact info@afpdc.org.

We'll barely have time to catch our breath from Fundraising Day before we'll be on to National Capital Philanthropy Day on November 14. We'll be joined again this year by Leon Harris from ABC7/WJLA TV and the winners of the 2005 Philanthropy Day awards will be announced in the coming days. To learn more about this exciting event and how you can “honor your own” exceptional partners, contact info@afpdc.org.

Finally, I would like to extend a warm congratulations and farewell to our Immediate Past President Celia Luxmoore, CFRE. Celia will be relocating to Richmond, VA to serve as Director of Development for the John Marshall Foundation. Celia has provided tremendous leadership to AFP/DC over the years and we wish her all the best in her new job!

Best wishes for a spectacular fall fundraising season!

Sincerely,

Kathy Swayze, CFRE
President

Mentoring Program
- A Mentee Speaks Up

What are the benefits of the AFP Mentoring Program? Stephanie Weishaar, a Mentee, values many aspects of her relationship, including:

(1) Having someone to bounce ideas off of and share her experience with
(2) Feeling like she has another development professional working alongside her though she is in a small office
(3) Being able to assure her Executive Director and BOD that she has discussed ideas with a seasoned veteran

The Mentoring Committee now needs Mentors who can help Mentees:

(1) See the overall financial picture of their organization
(2) Develop/build a broad-based fundraising shop
(3) Work on planned giving

We also have a Mentor ready to share her expertise in special events fundraising.

Please consider joining us today! Sign up by faxing your application as either a Mentor or Mentee to 202-547-6348 or to Lee MacVaugh at 703- 683-5722.

Thanks to The Sheridan Group for sponsoring the Mentoring Program.
