E-BAG August
2005
E-Bag Sponsored by Donor
Strategies
Message from the President
Dear AFP/DC Members,
Welcome to your August E-Bag! It may be
August but I can assure you that there are no “lazy
days of summer” here at AFP/DC. We're gearing
up for the busy fall season with our biggest events
of the year.
- Fundraising Day Washington (FDW) on October 26; and
- National Capital Philanthropy Day (NCPD) on November 14.
The Fundraising Day leadership team has
finalized speakers for six outstanding tracks and two
plenary sessions. Look for the conference flyer in your
mailbox later this month or visit our website at www.afpdc.org
today for more details.
This year's NCPD leadership team
is also in high gear. Thanks to the hard work of Ruth
Cogen and Jenny Strimel, we have a record number 18
co-conveners signed on for this year's event.
We're delighted to welcome Americans for the Arts,
the Latino Federation of Greater Washington, the National
Center for Black Philanthropy, United Way of the National
Capital Area and Volunteers of America as new partners
this year.
Fundraising Day Washington and National
Capital Philanthropy Day should both be on your “must
do” list for the fall. If you haven't done
so already, please mark your calendar now for these
two signature events.
I also want to take a moment to acknowledge
AFP/DC Board Member Betsy Blume, CFRE for her work this
year on the Government Relations front. As you know,
it's been a busy year for Government Relations
as our sector responds to proposals under consideration
in the Senate Finance Committee. Betsy joined dozens
of other nonprofit professionals last week on Capitol
Hill for a “Congressional Fly-In and Speak Out
About Charitable Reform Proposals”. The event
was sponsored by the Alliance for Charitable Reform,
the American Council on Education, Americans for the
Arts, the National Committee on Planned Giving, and
the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Betsy
and others used the opportunity to talk directly with
members and staff in the Senate, including Senate Finance
Committee members.
Finally, let me say “Thank You”
to every volunteer who supports this chapter …
whether you serve on a committee, speak at an event,
or make membership calls… we really appreciate
your efforts to make our chapter and our profession
stronger.
Enjoy your summer!
Sincerely,
Kathy Swayze, CFRE
President

AFP/DC Announces 2005-2006 Member Directory & Resource
Guide - update due August 12
A message to our business partners
and members:
Production of the AFP/DC 2005-2006 Member Directory
& Resource Guide is underway. The new edition of
the Directory, launched with an inaugural edition in
2004, is set for release in late October.
This valuable member resource is produced in cooperation
with Naylor Publications. The Directory & Resource
Guide is supported by advertising commitments from our
business partners. Naylor representatives have already
begun to contact current advertisers regarding renewal
for the new publication year, and will be soliciting
new advertisers over the coming weeks. Your consideration
of this unique opportunity to reach the AFP/DC membership
in a publication which will become a daily member resource,
used throughout the coming year, is sincerely appreciated.
Your support makes the Directory & Resource Guide
possible, at minimal cost to our chapter.
If you are an individual member of our chapter, you
will be receiving a communication from Naylor shortly
giving you an opportunity to review and update your
current member information by August 12. That information,
drawn from the AFP International member database, will
become your chapter directory listing. Please review
it carefully. We encourage our members to visit the
AFP International website, www.afpnet.org,
to review their individual listings by logging in and
clicking "Address Change".
A new feature of the AFP International website allows
you to list two addresses in your AFP record. The "Primary
Address" will be pulled and published in the chapter
directory.
The AFP/DC directory sorts each member in three sections
(by name, organization, and type of organization). Please
click on "Demographics" on the AFP International
website to assure you will be listed appropriately in
each section.
Your help will assure a comprehensive and accurate 2005-2006
AFP/DC Member Directory and Resource Guide.

for funding;
B) Writing a more effective grant proposal;
C) Planning events that are profitable; and,
D) Getting Boards more involved in fundraising.
Please consider joining us today!
Sign up by faxing your application as
