E-BAG JuLY 2005 E-Bag Sponsored by Donor
Strategies Senate charitable reform bill
expected any day! Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley has indicated he wants charitable reform legislation passed BEFORE the end of the summer. Many of the proposals under consideration could have a dramatic impact on your fundraising efforts. So, if you haven't been following what's happening in the Senate, it's time to start. As you may know, the Nonprofit Panel (convened by Independent Sector) released a report of recommendations to the Senate Finance Committee on June 22. You can download a copy of their recommendations at www.nonprofitpanel.org/final. Joined by several members of your AFP/DC chapter, I have been actively working with the Coalition to Uphold Noncash Charitable Giving (convened by AFP International and the American Association of Museums to address proposals to change or eliminate charitable deductions for non-cash contributions.) I would like to thank Board members Betsy Blume, Jeff Kost and Geoffrey Peters, and member Beverly Hoffman for their hard work on behalf of our sector. It is widely believed that some form of charitable reform legislation has already been drafted and could be released soon after the July 4th holiday. The Coalition has developed a Quick Response Plan that will be implemented as soon as legislation is unveiled. As an AFP/DC member, you will be one of the first to get the news. But we don't have to wait for a bill to make sure our Senators are hearing from us. Please continue to write and/or visit your Senate offices to urge them NOT to impose burdensome requirements for charities that make it more difficult to provide vital services to our communities. More information and sample letters can be found in the News and Views section of our web site at www.afpdc.org. Please take time out today to make your voice heard. Thank you, as always, for your membership in AFP/DC. Sincerely,
Kathy Swayze, CFRE
