Message from the President (May also be viewed on our web site.)

As you read this, thousands of fundraisers from throughout the country and the world are heading to our region for the AFP International Conference on Fundraising, April 2 to 6 in Baltimore, MD. The conference is the world's largest event focusing on fundraising and nonprofit management with more than 150 sessions.

I am looking forward to seeing many of my fellow AFP/DC members there and to sharing ideas with fellow fundraisers from throughout the world. Whether or not you are attending the conference, I hope you will take time to join us at the AFP/DC Chapter reception at the Waterfront Marriott on April 4 (details below).

I am especially pleased that five fundraisers from our region will be attending this year's conference with the assistance of AFP/DC's scholarship fund. As a chapter, we are committed to providing access to all of our educational programming, even to organizations with limited budgets. To learn more about our scholarship offerings for the rest of this year, please visit our website.

Planning is well underway for two key AFP/DC events this fall. I urge you to mark your calendars for October 26 for Fundraising Day Washington and November 14 for National Capital Philanthropy Day. The chapter is fortunate to have four outstanding individuals who have stepped forward to lead these events, Grace Hong and Donna Englander will serve as Co-Chairs of Fundraising Day and Beth Brummel and Brooks Kenny will Co-Chair the National Capital Philanthropy Day event. I am deeply grateful to all of them for their leadership. If you are interested in helping with these events, please fill out the volunteer form on our website.

In closing, I want to take a moment to remember Ron Carroll, CFRE, a past leader and good friend of the Washington, DC chapter for many years. Ron, former Chief Development Officer for Boy Scouts of America and one of the top fundraisers in the United States, passed away on February 28, 2005. He had battled brain cancer since December, 2003. Ron served as chair of the AFP International (then NSFRE) in 1997 and 1998 and was recognized by The Nonprofit Times as one of the 50 most influential people in the nonprofit sector in the United States.

Ron and his wife Pam have made an initial pledge to establish an endowment for the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy that would support international chapter development outside of North America. The AFP/DC chapter has made a contribution to the fund in his honor. Our profession lost one of its great leaders but the contributions he made will live on for many years to come.

Thank you as always for your membership in AFP/DC. Enjoy your spring!

Kathy Swayze, CFRE
President

Calling all Mentors! The AFP/DC Mentorship program has succeeded in attracting so much interest that several highly-motivated Mentees are waiting for you!

According to past evaluations, some of the ways you may benefit from being a Mentor include getting to know and encouraging others in the field, giving back after having received guidance early in your own career, and learning how things work at other nonprofits.

Another benefit is that you will earn ten points toward your CFRE criteria by mentoring.

Please consider signing up today to serve as a Mentor. You can fax your application as either a Mentor or Mentee to 202-547-6348.
