Dear Colleagues:
We are
still basking in the glow of a most successful Fundraising
Day Washington (FDW) on September
20. There were 609 attendees who all seemed to enjoy themselves,
to learn something new, to be reminded of the basics, and
to network, network, network. I met long-term AFP members,
new members, potential members and had the pleasure of meeting
the speakers and presenters. Our exhibitors and sponsors
were the backbone to a conference well run and supported
by more than 100 volunteers.
The
best sight for me was seeing our co-chairs late in the afternoon
with their shoes off, their feet up, and smiles of satisfaction
on their faces. Thank you again Tina Krall and Michelle
Powers Keegan. They made FDW look so easy and run so smoothly.
The photographer, Robert Merhaut, has made the FDW
pictures available from his web site.
But
we cannot rest on those laurels, or even rest our feet.
The next big event—an even bigger event for the wider
community—is National Capital Philanthropy
Day (NCPD) on November 12. This luncheon has the
ability to raise the consciousness of the less initiated
to the huge nonprofit voluntary sector of the Greater Washington
region. We have a dozen co-conveners
and, as last year, these will attract those less informed
about charitable enterprises who said “I had no idea
there was such a (fundraising) organization.” Let
us present AFP/DC as a premier organization for ethical
fundraising in the sector.
Please
act now to
We look
forward to seeing you at luncheons,
roundtables,
and NCPD
before the year is out.
Sincerely,
Celia
K. Luxmoore, CFRE
2004 AFP/DC President
Luncheon
Date:
Thursday, October 14, 2004
Topic: “The Code of Professional
Ethics: Percentage-Based Compensation"
-
The
Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) believes
that individuals serving a charity for compensation must
accept the principle that charitable purpose, not self-gain,
is paramount.
-
AFP
holds that percentage based compensation can encourage
abuses, imperils the integrity of the voluntary sector,
and undermines the very philanthropic values on which
the voluntary sector is based.
-
AFP
stands firm with its Standards of Professional Practice
which prohibits members from working for percentage-based
compensation or accepting finder's fees.
-
Join
us for a discussion about the AFP's philosophy and
how it might apply to you or your organization's
plans.
Speaker: Dorothy (Dot) Ridings -
President and CEO of the Council on Foundations and
the public member of the AFP's national Ethics Committee.
-
From
1988 until joining the Council in March, 1996, Ridings
served as publisher and president of Knight-Ridder's
Bradenton Herald in Bradenton, Florida.
-
She
served the League of Women Voters of the United States
as president from 1982 to 1986, a member of their board
from 1976 to 1986, and has been a trustee of the Ford
Foundation and a director of the Benton Foundation and
Independent Sector.

holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from Northwestern

Mentoring Program
For most of us, the fall brings a flurry
of activity as we prepare for donor visits, annual fund
appeals, and year-end pledge requests. Can you imagine having
to tackle all of that without the benefit of your expertise?
New fundraisers are in that position right here in DC, and
they would love to have the opportunity to learn from and
talk with you.
AFP/DC is seeking Mentors to provide one-year, one-on-one
assistance to new fundraisers. The mentor program provides
both fledgling and long-time fundraisers with the opportunity
to share and learn. And it doesn't take a huge commitment
of your time to participate. One past mentee said, "It
was so helpful to have proof that it is possible to continue
to work in the field and to feel a bit of community that
a one-person shop is lacking." To become a mentor or
mentee, contact AFP/DC at 202-547-0155 and info@afpdc.org.
Mentees
must be members of AFP/DC who have worked as a full-time
paid development professional at a nonprofit organization
for a minimum of one year. Please submit your fully completed
mentee application by faxing it to 202-547-6348. Mentor
applications can also be faxed to 202-547-6348. Participation
in the Mentoring Program is contingent upon the identification
of an appropriate match. Please note that the Mentoring
Program is not intended to be a substitute for formal consulting
services. If your organization requires long-term or extensive
assistance, AFP/DC encourages you to hire professional counsel.
Thank you.

Every Member Campaign
Definition:
The Every Member Campaign is the annual appeal to support
the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy. A contribution to the
Foundation is an expression of support for our profession.
Purpose:
The Foundation is committed to supporting AFP strategic
initiatives, as well as funding research awards, educational
opportunities and scholarships to the AFP International
Conference—all aimed at providing opportunities to
our members and to advancing our profession. A portion of
what is raised within our Chapter comes back to our chapter
and provides those first-rate educational opportunities,
scholarships, and mentoring programs that we believe to
be a priority to our Chapter membership.
Opportunity:
Some chapter members who attended the International Conference
made their gift to the Every Member Campaign (EMC) on site.
To those of you who did, we thank you for your generosity
and leadership. All chapter members will be contacted in
the months ahead and asked to give to the Every Member Campaign.
More:
If you would like to learn more about EMC or to learn more
about giving opportunities, you can visit the Foundation
for Philanthropy section of the AFP web site. If you
have any questions, you can contact Jeff Kost, chair of
AFP/DC's 2004 Every
Member Campaign at 202-457-0540 or e-mail him at jeffk@wcanonprofits.org.
