Welcome from the President

Dear Colleagues:

June 7 is Party Time. At the O Street Mansion we will have a member party--just for fun. However, to attend you must respond to the invitation info@afpdc.org. Only 200 people will be able to be there. Make sure you are one of them. Other than this party . . .

Summer is not a time to relax at AFP/DC. It is a time for increased volunteer activity. There are two upcoming special events of immense importance to the Chapter. They raise our profile and our income. Preparations for them must be made during these hot months.

Monday, September 20, 2004, is this year's Fundraising Day Washington (FDW). In order to make this a fine educational experience for participants and a good contact place for vendors and exhibitors, we have to fill the tracks with sessions and the exhibit hall with booths. How is this done? By the hard work of many, many volunteers. We need people to seek exhibitors, recommend speakers, and work out logistics on the day. Volunteers are particularly needed for exhibitor set-up and work on the day of the conference. Contact Tina Krall, co-chair, via info@afpdc.org or our volunteer coordinator Randi Nordeen, via info@afpdc.org who will put you in touch with your interests.

Friday, November 12, 2004 is National Capital Philanthropy Day (NCPD). This is Greater Washington's contribution to a national celebration of philanthropy. We have 600 people to a lunch honoring philanthropy and those donors and workers who contribute so much to the filed. We work with a group of high-level co-convenors and sponsors. NCPD has done us a great deal of good by raising the consciousness of AFP as a professional and ethical association. NCPD also raises funds to support our invaluable education programs and the scholarship program in the chapter.

We are seeking a chair and other help for the NCPD sponsorship committee. Honor Your Own can use some volunteers and we need someone who would be able to coordinate logistics for the event. Contact our volunteer coordinator, Randi Nordeen, via info@afpdc.org.

Please be thinking "How can I contribute?" and set to work this summer.

Sincerely,

Celia K. Luxmoore, CFRE
2004 AFP/DC President

Every Member Campaign

Definition: The Every Member Campaign is the annual appeal to support the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy. A contribution to the Foundation is an expression of support for our profession.

Purpose: The Foundation is committed to supporting AFP strategic initiatives, as well as funding research awards, educational opportunities and scholarships to the AFP International Conference—all aimed at providing opportunities to our members and to advancing our profession. A portion of what is raised within our Chapter comes back to our chapter and provides those first-rate educational opportunities, scholarships, and mentoring programs that we believe to be a priority to our Chapter membership.

Opportunity: Some chapter members who attended the International Conference made their gift to the Every Member Campaign (EMC) on site. To those of you who did, we thank you for your generosity and leadership. All chapter members will be contacted in the months ahead and asked to give to the Every Member Campaign.

More: If you would like to learn more about EMC or to learn more about giving opportunities, you can visit the Foundation for Philanthropy section of the AFP web site. If you have any questions, you can contact Jeff Kost, chair of AFP/DC's 2004 Every Member Campaign at 202-457-0540 or e-mail him at jeffk@wcanonprofits.org.
