Welcome from the President

Dear Friends:

This has been an exhilarating month for AFP members and for members of this Chapter. Many of us attended the AFP International Conference in Seattle where we learned and played--and ate well. It is always stimulating to meet fundraisers from all over the world and to find similar challenges and concerns.

AFP/DC Chapter won a 10-Star Chapter Award for being an exemplary chapter and also two additional awards for highest overall giving to the Every Member Campaign and the highest Metro IV Chapter Giving. This demonstrates not only the generosity of our members, but their recognition of the need for expanding educational opportunities in the profession. In this e-bag you will see information on this year's Every Member Campaign. Please read it carefully and consider thoughtfully your contribution. You will receive a written appeal and a phone call follow-up.

Another area of immense generosity in the DC Chapter is numerous volunteer hours, especially those from members of the Chapter's Board of Directors. Particular thanks to Sue Woodward as Treasurer. She has pursued the finances of this Chapter terrier-like over several years (this is a big compliment to her since I am a dog-lover!). Sue has had to resign as Treasurer because of the pressure of her work and the constant travel required. She will stay on the Board, and we are glad to have her wisdom.

Stepping up to the task of Treasurer is Nan McConnell. Nan has worked diligently as Vice President of Governance, bringing to our notice the increasing concern of regulation and legislation. Assisting her in the treasury task will be a new member of the Board, Allison Porter. Moving into Nan's place as Vice President of Governance will be Betsy Blume who has already begun various tasks including the revision of our by-laws. These new positions will be brought to the Board for confirmation at the May Board meeting.

So thank you all for your generosity of spirit, energy, ability, and time in making AFP/DC the best Chapter it can be.

Sincerely,

Celia K. Luxmoore, CFRE
2004 AFP/DC President

Planned Giving 101

AFP/DC in cooperation with the National Capital Gift Planning Council and the Washington Council of Agencies have produced a stellar five-part series on planned giving. Our goal is to increase philanthropy in the region by empowering you to use planned giving as part of your fundraising strategy.

Thanks to Merrill Lynch for hosting the series.

Date: The first Seminar is Wednesday, April 21, 2004

The Big Picture Presenter: Robert J. Brennan, President, Aronson Philanthropic Partners, LLC
Why do planned giving? What's in it for you? Need to convince your Board to start a planned giving program? We will supply a compelling case for adding planned giving to your organization's fundraising strategy. CFOs are encouraged to attend with Development Directors.

Non-Cash Gifts Presenters: Angela Woo Sosdian, Deputy Director of Philanthropy and Director of Gift Planning, The Nature Conservancy and Alan S. Kobren, CFM, Vice President and Wealth Management Advisor, Merrill Lynch
Non-cash gifts are one of the most valuable assets a donor can use to make a gift to charity. Titles, mortgages, marketability, and environmental risks – we will give you a checklist. Gifts of appreciated stock and mutual funds are easy, once you know how. A gift acceptance policy for your organization is essential to avoid sticky situations.

Cost: $130 for the entire six-session series/ $35 per session
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
Location: Merrill Lynch, 1850 K Street, NW, Washington, DC
Future sessions include: Basic Planned Giving Vehicles, Bequests, Gift Annuities, and How to Make the Ask
Register: www.wcanonprofits.org or send questions to ccooke@aronsoncompany.com.

Every Member Campaign

Definition: The Every Member Campaign is the annual appeal to support the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy. A contribution to the Foundation is an expression of support for our profession.

Purpose: The Foundation is committed to supporting AFP strategic initiatives, as well as funding research awards, educational opportunities and scholarships to the AFP International Conference—all aimed at providing opportunities to our members and to advancing our profession. A portion of what is raised within our Chapter comes back to our chapter and provides those first-rate educational opportunities, scholarships, and mentoring programs that we believe to be a priority to our Chapter membership.

Opportunity: Some chapter members who attended the International Conference made their gift to the Every Member Campaign (EMC) on site. To those of you who did, we thank you for your generosity and leadership. All chapter members will be contacted in the months ahead and asked to give to the Every Member Campaign.

More: If you would like to learn more about EMC or to learn more about giving opportunities, you can visit the Foundation section of the AFP web site at: http://www.afpnet.org/afp_foundation_for_philanthropy. If you have any questions, you can contact Jeff Kost, chair of AFP/DC's 2004 Every Member Campaign at 202-457-0540 or email him at jeffk@wcanonprofits.org.

Updating Your Membership Files

Being a member of a professional association provides you access to valuable information. Please take two minutes and verify your membership file at www.afpnet.org. Your membership file is maintained in the database at AFP International and only they (and you) can update your membership file.

Since AFP International has 26,000 members, you can not access your file by your name. Your e-mail address is unique and is used to access your file. So when you log on to the "address change" field, your "login name" is actually your e-mail. If you forget your password, use the link provided. You will soon find out if they have your e-mail on file. If they don't have your e-mail on file, simply e-mail the database office by using afp@afpnet.org and use the subject line of "Information Update".

We have great plans for 2004 and want to make sure you are included!

Classified Ads

Do you have a job to post? We can get your ad to 1,000 members of AFP/DC via the monthly e-bag for only $75 a month. What a deal and it sure beats handing out photocopies!
