E-Bag - May 2, 2008

Dear Members:

I don’t know about you, but I can’t believe it’s May already. It’s that time of year where the weather is beautiful, everything is looking fresh and green, and you just want to get outside. As you know, this is a very short window before the oppressive heat and humidity of Washington DC summers return. So, please enjoy this great time of year and please also take advantage of what AFP DC has lined up in the next few months.

Don’t Forget to Vote!
No, not the 2008 Presidential Election (how could we possibly forget!) but for AFP DC’s board of directors and officers for 2008-2009. The slate of officers, biographies and voting instructions will be sent to you very soon. Also, we have undergone changes to our chapter bylaws. The revised bylaws approved by the AFP DC board will also be sent out to you via email for your vote to adopt them.  Please do your part as an AFP DC member in good standing and vote. It is your responsibility and a privilege! Thank you.

ROUNDTABLE PROGRAM – May 27

“Data and Stats and Charts – Oh My!” -- Using Research and Studies to Make Your Case

How can you use research data and statistics to make your organization’s case and in crafting proposals?  The program will not only focus on how to use/incorporate this information effectively, but also on how funders typically interpret stats, charts, data or quotes from studies.  The conversation will be led by two professionals who come to the issue from different angles. Can statistics be an effective part of storytelling? And what happens when a funder looks at research study data in a proposal?
Kathy Swayze, CFRE, President of Impact Communications will talk about how she helps organizations to incorporate data, statistics, etc. into direct mail copy and brochure language.  Bob Wittig, Executive Director of the Jovid Foundation, will take up the issue from the funder’s perspective.  He will help participants to bear in mind what foundations actually think when they read research data or poll statistics in a letter or proposal.  How do you think they react?  Are they skeptical? Do they trust it?  What makes it compelling or not?  Come to May’s Roundtable and find out!
