AFP/DC E-BAG - April 2008

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear AFP/DC Members:

I have just returned from the 45th AFP International Conference on Fundraising in San Diego, CA. Our chapter was well represented at this year’s conference. Many AFP DC board members and members attended, including our new Executive Director for AFP DC, Annette Summers. In advance of the conference, I attended the Chapter Presidents Council and “Like-Sized Chapter” meetings where I represented our chapter and had the opportunity to discuss with other chapter presidents our similar challenges and opportunities. In my many years of attending this conference, all three plenary speakers, Kevin Carroll, Dr. Jane Goodall, and Sir Bob Geldof, were not only inspirational, but also reminded me of why we all need to be true to ourselves and be passionate to be our best as professional fundraisers and people.

Back to DC, it has been a seamless and fantastic transition since our new association management firm Giuffrida Associates began working formally with us on February 1, 2008. Our talented and capable staff including Annette Summers, Executive Director, Marlease Bushnell, Operations Manager, and Kristin Cullen, Membership Services Coordinator, have been working so hard and well with great knowledge, expertise, and enthusiasm, leading and guiding our AFP DC leadership. Annette will be facilitating our AFP DC board strategic planning retreat to discuss ways we can better serve our AFP DC members in the future, both in the educational services and networking we provide and ways to diversify our own chapter revenue streams so we can continue to be a vibrant and financially sound organization. I encourage you to call our AFP DC staff at (202) 547-0155 to see how they may be able to help and serve you.

Save the Date! National Capital Philanthropy Day will take place on November 17th at the (now infamous!) Mayflower Hotel. I am so pleased to announce that AFP DC board member Carol Shannon has agreed to co-chair this event. Volunteers are needed and welcome on many subcommittees, particularly sponsorship and communications. Please contact Carol Shannon directly at 202-772-4395 or Carol.Shannon@catholiccharitiesdc.org if you are willing and able to help. We need you to get involved with your chapter!

Thank you. Enjoy the spring weather and Cherry Blossoms. May they inspire and refresh you.

Best wishes,

Grace Hong
President 2007-2008

Special Notice to Chapter Members

Dear AFP/DC Chapter members,

We are sorry to report that one of our earliest AFP/DC Chapter members, Sandy Davidson (Charles Hyde Davison, IV), 60 years of age, died on February 7 in Spartanburg, SC. Sandy left the DC area in the mid-1990s with his wife, Mary Alice, who had worked with him at the same association for many years.

The obituary that appeared in the Washington Post in mid-February stated that Sandy, who was in the Army Reserves while a member of AFP, returned to active duty and was a Major General U.S. Army (retired) at the time of his death. Following is a web site that has stories written by the men who served under Sandy.  See the link below. Their stories are so moving.

http://americanranger.blogspot.com/2008/02/farewell-and-godspeed-major-general.html

Sandy was an especially good friend of ours (Barbara Ciconte and Jeanne Jacob) as we knew one another for more than 25 years. We would see Sandy at AFP's annual conference each year, and we remained in contact with him both socially and professionally over the years.

Sandy will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery on April 29 at 9 a.m. For those wishing to attend, guests are asked to gather at the Old Post Chapel at the Cemetery at 8:30 a.m.  You can call the Visitors Information Center at 703-607-8000 or Internment Services at 703-607-8585 for more information.

A very special love of Sandy's was his college -- Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC.  Many years ago, he established a scholarship fund in his name at the college.  His family asked that memorial gifts be made to the scholarship fund, and a number of AFP members already have decided to make a gift in memory of this special friend.

If you wish to make a gift, please send a check (by May 15) made out to Wofford College to Barbara whose address is below.  Barbara will prepare a cover letter explaining our gifts and asking that they be directed to the Charles H. Davidson, IV Scholarship Fund at the college.

We hope you will join us at the funeral to pay tribute to one of the early members of the AFP/DC Chapter.  Sandy's passing has brought to mind many wonderful memories of the early AFP/DC Chapter days!

With best regards,

Barbara Kushner Ciconte, CFRE
Jeanne G. Jacob, CFRE, CAE
